Why the Question Arises Before a Birth
Exposure does not begin at delivery. Establishing the position of a household's water before an arrival allows any finding to be addressed while there is time to act on it unhurriedly.
Drinking water is also the exposure route a household can characterize precisely, since a tap is a defined point and lead is a defined parameter with a defined analytical method.
Where Lead Enters Household Water
Lead enters through contact with plumbing components that contain it, including the water service line, lead tin solder at pipe joints and brass throughout the supply path.
Lead bearing components in routine use today include tub and shower mixing valves, faucet bodies in kitchens and bathrooms, backflow preventers and pressure reducing valves, faucet cartridge housings and stems, well pump and booster pump wetted components, ball and gate valves on domestic hot and cold isolation, angle stops and shutoff valves beneath sinks and behind appliances, hose bibbs and exterior spigots. Fixtures produced to the lead free standard nonetheless return measurable lead when the water is analyzed, which is why age tells a household very little.
How Lead Is Sampled
Lead is collected as an ordered sequence of draws along the supply path. The first draw reflects water standing in the fixture and the branch line behind it, and successive draws reach further upstream toward the riser and the water service line.
